An Enchanting Evening at 'DanSing Thru Broadway'

Musical fans in Kuala Lumpur were treated to an exciting revue of songs and scenes from well-loved Broadway musicals when 'DanSing Thru Broadway' raised its curtains at Auditorium Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur last week.

The two-hour long charity musical, organised by the Association of Wives and Female Staff of PETRONAS (PETRONITA), captivated its audience with its selection of familiar hits from such well-recognised musicals such as Miss Saigon, Aida, Oklahoma and Phantom of the Opera.

Performed by a cast of seasoned performers such as Radhi Khalid, Reefa, Sabrina Hassan and Tria Aziz, as well as new, up and coming faces such as Johan Yusof, Carmen Choo and the very talented Junior Sayang Dancers, the show kept the audience's feet tapping to tunes such as Kansas City, Welcome to the 60s, Sandy and Jolly Holiday.

Woven around the protagonist Karim's encounter with Grey, a theatre producer, the musical is essentially a nostalgic journey into familiar, sometimes light-hearted and sometimes passionate scenes from Broadway productions that can be considered the hallmark of the musical genre, combining the elements of theatre, dance and music.

The powerful vocals and seamless choreography exhibited by the cast truly impressed the audience, who especially applauded the efforts of the younger talents from the Junior Sayang Dancers, comprising primary and secondary school students. The colonnaded colonial architecture of the Auditorium DBKL proved to be a fitting venue for the musical showcase as it evoked the nostalgia of an elegant, bygone age, as expressed in some of the musical excerpts.

Proceeds from the three-day run of 'DanSing Thru Broadway' were initially intended to benefit three charity initiatives, namely The Children Dialysis Fund of the National Kidney Foundation, the Children's Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Corrective Surgery Community Project and the Musculo-Skeletal Cancer Treatment Regional Centre.

However, due to the overwhelming response from donors, PETRONITA has also decided to contribute to Mercy Malaysia's medical relief programme in Gaza and the 'Sayang Matamu' project, a collaboration it initiated with the Prince Court Medical Centre's Eye Centre.

The donations to the five charity initiatives, along with the musical charity performances are fitting gifts to the needy as PETRONITA celebrated its 30th anniversary this year.

Puan Sri Noraini Mohd Yusoff, President of PETRONITA, who is also the wife of PETRONAS President and Chief Executive, Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican said the charities provide financial help to families with affected children, allowing them a chance to lead normal lives.

"By contributing in this manner, PETRONITA hopes to help improve the quality and reach of the treatments offered to the affected children and raise public awareness on charities and funds designed to assist children and people that need help the most," she added.

'DanSing Thru Broadway' was choreographed by Farah Dato' Seri Sulaiman of the famed Sayang Dancers and directed by actress Sabrina Hassan.

Dansing Through Broadway kembali dipentas

yanie@hmetro.com.my

Sebanyak 22 lagu didendangkan dalam teater berdurasi dua jam ini, antaranya dipetik melalui My Fair Lady (Correction: My Fair Lady not available in Season 2), Mary Poppins, Hello Doly (Correction: It is "Hello Dolly"), Oliver, Miss Saigon, Phantom of The Opera, Son & Moon (Correction: The song "Sun & Moon" is from the Musical Miss Saigon") dan Hair Spray (Correction: "Hairspray").

Seramai 42 pelakon dewasa termasuk kanak-kanak terbabit, antaranya adalah Radhi Khalid, Peter Ong, Doreen Tang (Correction: Doreen not with us for Season 2), Tria, Ho Soon Yoon, Nicole-Ann Thomas, Brian Mac, Sabrina Hassan dan Johan Yusof.

Ia turut membabitkan Sayang Dancers and Sayang Junior Dancers.

Manakala Tria, juara program realiti Anugerah, berasa teruja dan bertuah kerana diberi kepercayaan membawakan watak Dolly Levy (naskhah Holle Doly)(Correction: Again, it is "Hello Dolly"), Princess Amarie (Correction: Princess Amneris") (Musical Aida) serta beberapa watak sampingan.

Farewell to our Rehearsal Space

Time passed really like a blink of an eye. Without knowing it we have been rehearsing every Sunday since Sept 2007 onwards.

I still remember meeting up with the cast members for the first time during a high tea at Duta Nusantara and how we rehearse during every Sunday afternoon. Good recollections.

Thank you very much to all our rehearsal spaces namely Duta Nusantara's Club House & Dance Space, Plaza Damas for keeping us save. We had a smooth bump in on Monday night.

Some of us dedicated our free hours for recording and travelled from Kepong to TTDI just to help out with the music accompaniment.

Tria Aziz, the leading voice for the theme song of the movie, "Waris Jari Hantu", is now a full fledge jazz dancer apart from her natural singing talent. You wont missed her especially in her song, "My Strongest Suit" accompanied by the multi talented Sayang Dancers.

Farah Sulaiman will also bring you back into the beautiful world of Mary Poppins in the song "Jolly Holiday". Even the Daffodils could dance and sing. Do catch Johan Yusof and Sabrina Hassan in this lovely number. My all time personal favourite are the cute little animals that appeared on stage during the bridge of the song. You'd really have to watch the show yourself.

As for traveling to Panggung Bandaraya, make sure you plan your journey well. Parking spaces are available along the river or near the St Mary's Cathedral next to Dataran Merdeka.

There are nearby restaurants for you and your love ones to grab a quick bite namely The Tebing food court, Burger King or even McDonalds. If you are more adventurous, you can even proceed to the famous beef noodle store just nearby Jalan Silang.

Radhi Khalid is someone that you must watch. From a rugged Cowboy, he transformed himself into a leader of the pickpockets playing Faggin for songs from Oliver.

Apart from his serious look, Radhi is actually a cool guy. Catch him in the upcoming 8TV miniseries "Goda". I am also part of the cast, during the 3rd Episode.

So, are we all that serious? Probably not. Look at us at the following photos? The giggle bunch. Soon Yoon, Tria & Peter.

Dansing Thru Broaway opens at Panggung Bandaraya on the 25th June 2008. This project is in aid of the Kanak Kanak Istimewa Hulu Lngat (Special Children of Hulu Langat).

Here is a glimpse of the show featuring the junior members of Dansing Thru Broadway rehearsing their bits during the tech run yesterday. Enjoy.

FROM the choreographer of Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical (Farah was NOT the choreographer of PGLM. Don't know where the reporter got this info. Tsk tsk) comes DanSing Thru Broadway, a musical performance in aid of Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Hulu Langat.

It is organised by Farah Sulaiman & Friends which comprises Lynda Leong, Aida Farisa, Azizan, Nora Shariff, Fatimah Ahmad, Zuraina Wong and Farah.

Farah & Friends have been working together since the production of Jalan Impian... The Musical in 2005.

DanSing Thru Broadway is choreographed and produced by Farah and directed by Sabrina Hassan with Helen Yap as the music director.

It tells the story of Karim who aspires to be a Broadway star. The geeky and somewhat timid Karim attends an interview for a personal assistant’s job to Grey, a theatre producer.

Grey is appalled by Karim’s lacklustre demeanour. He tells Karim the story of Hello Dolly where Cornelius and Barnaby present themselves as millionaires to attract their dream girls.

Hence, the journey through Broadway begins for Karim.

The musical features 20 hit songs from Broadway musicals such as Hello Dolly, Miss Saigon, My Fair Lady and Grease as well as Mary Poppins.

“It was difficult to audition for the boys’ roles as they seem to shy away from theatre, particularly musicals. Dancing and singing are probably not their field of interest,” said Farah. The cast of 39 children and adults include Aidil (AF), Peter Ong, Radhi Khalid, Doreen Tang, Sabrina Hassan, Brian Mac and many more. It also features the Sayang Dancers and Sayang Junior Dancers.

DanSing Thru Broadway will be staged at Panggung Bandaraya, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) from June 25-29.

Ticket are priced at RM103.50/RM83.50 on Gala Night (June 28), RM83.50/RM53.50 (June 25-28) and RM43.50 for matinee shows (June 28 and 29). Showtimes: 3pm and 8pm.

For bookings, log on to http://ticket2u.biz or call 03-4149-8600 .

This event is sponsored by ONEKL, Tradewinds Corporation Bhd and Sunrise Bhd.

DanSing Thru Broadway is also supported by Lembah Sari, Kiara View, Fitters, Berjaya Corporation Bhd, PPC Glomac Sdn Bhd and DBKL.

Musical in aid of special kids

By TAN KARR WEI

IT was a touching and delightful sight to see eight-year-old Tan Kok Siong holding the hand of a cast member of DanSing Thru Broadway and dancing and singing.

Tan, who has Down Syndrome, goes to Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Hulu Langat (PKKI) three times a week.

Altogether now: The children from Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Hulu Langat (in
purple T-shirts) with the cast of DanSing Thru Broadway. With them are Siti Nooriah
(right), Farah ulaiman (front row, left) and PKKI president Shirley Tan (second row,
second from left)

He was one of the children who attended the preview of the charity musical DanSing Thru Broadway at the Duta Nusantara clubhouse in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Nur Ain Abdul Malik, 11, who has cerebral palsy and attends physiotherapy session twice a week at the centre, also swayed to the music.

Produced by Farah Sulaiman and directed by Sabrina Hassan, the show features songs from Broadway productions like Hello Dolly, Oliver, Miss Saigon, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and Grease.

A cast of 20 children and 19 adults will be performing at Panggung Bandaraya DBKL from June 25 to June 29.

Datin Seri Siti Nooriah Ana Razak, wife of Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique, is proud to be back as a patron for the charity show, after a successful run of another charity musical Jalan Impian three years ago.

Farah, a renowned dancer and choreographer, said it was not easy getting children who could sing and dance but most of the children were involved in Jalan Impian and some of them had asked her to start a dance class after that.

Sabrina said she loved working with the children.

“I have to be a bit tactful with the adults but I can scream and shout at the children and they won't take offence,” she said.

The event is sponsored and supported by Sunrise Berhad, ONEKL, and Tradewinds Corpo-ration Bhd.

Proceeds from the musical goes to PKKI. Tickets priced at RM83.50 and RM53.50. Tickets for gala night on June 28 are priced at RM103.50 and RM83.50. Matinee shows on June 28 and 29 are priced at RM43.50. For tickets, call 03-4149 8600 (Mondays to Fridays, 9am to 5pm) or log on to http://ticket2u.biz.
